What your AI-built app is missing before launch

I build a lot with AI tools now. So do a lot of the people I talk to. You describe what you want, and forty minutes later there's a working app on the screen. It's genuinely one of the best things to happen to small operators in a decade.

Here's the part nobody puts on the demo reel: the tool built exactly what you described — and nothing you didn't. Everything you never thought to ask for is still missing. It just doesn't show up when you're clicking through the happy path on your own laptop.

I've started running every app I take seriously through the same 13-layer check before I'll call it ready. Not because I'm paranoid — because the same five things are broken almost every single time.

1. It falls apart on a phone. The desktop demo looks great. Then a real customer opens it on an iPhone and the buttons stack on top of each other. Most traffic is mobile. The AI optimized for the screen you were staring at.

2. The forms fail silently. Someone hits submit, something errors, and they get… nothing. No message, no retry, no idea it didn't go through. You never hear about the lead because the lead never knew it failed either.

3. Anyone can read the database. This is the scary one. "It works" and "each customer can only see their own data" are two completely different things, and AI tools cheerfully ship the first without the second. Row-level security isn't a feature you see — it's the wall that isn't there.

4. There's nothing between you and a runaway bill. No rate limits. One bad loop, one bot, one unexpected spike, and you find out what your app costs at 3am from an email you don't want to open.

5. The backups have never been restored. "We have backups" is not the same as "we have gotten the app back from a backup." Until you've actually done the restore, you have a folder you hope works.

None of this is exotic. It's just the unglamorous half of shipping software — the half that doesn't demo. AI closed the gap on the fun part and left the boring, load-bearing part exactly where it was.

That's the whole idea behind the Launch-Ready Audit: run your app through all 13 layers — frontend, APIs, data, auth, hosting, cost, CI/CD, security, rate limits, caching, scaling, monitoring, recovery — and hand you a scorecard, the specific holes with evidence, and a fix list ranked by what'll bite first. Two of those layers are hard stops: if anyone can reach someone else's data, the app doesn't ship, full stop, no matter how good the rest looks.

If you've got something built and you're not 100% sure what your tools quietly skipped, that's exactly when to look. Better you find it than your users.
